Simplicity is one of the top virtues in Buddhism.
It is, in essence, the distillation of all virtues, but also their culmination.
And what applies to philosophy, whether western or eastern, it also applies to everyday things and activities.
Art, even it seems a luxury, is an everyday expression of life.
Everything around us involves art and is always an supplement to all our actions, like cooking.
Jack White and his band or his music companions (namely: all the musical project he is joining or creates music with them), honor this virtue by “musically” cooking with a lot of simplicity.
Simple food is also the Hungarian Gulasz (or pörkölt and in the Slavic countries perkelt).
It is named after the word gulyás, which means shepherd.
Shepherd, but in musical pastures is Jack White, who returns after 11 years to The Raconteurs project.
Together with Brendan Benson they are key creators of the third album of “Help Us Stranger”.
Like Gulasz, he expanded even to Ireland, seeking different executions.
Always keeping the simplicity of its preparation.
The new album of the Americans from Michigan Detroit moves with the same simple materials.
A basic ingredient is the musical intelligence of the two main creators and their inspiration.
Inspiration can also fit into the simplicity of the Gulasz recipe, where the main ingredient is any kind of meat.
Here we will present its Polish version of pork.
Materials:
1 kg of pork cut into cubes of about 2 cm, two large onions, 3 paprika bell peppers, one pepper, 5 bay leaves, a few spices, curry, smoked paprika, coriander, salt pepper.
Bored and Razed
The album starts with “Bored and Razed” and at the same time the song comes in, we put the meat with some oil on a relatively strong fire until it roasts a bit.
The same is also the first song of the album. Tempo dominates and is what drives music.
The guitars are simple but it quickly gets the listener’s attention with strong riffs, which resemble the 1970’s.
Be careful not to burn the meat … Just get some brown color.
Help Me Stranger
At the same time that “Help Me Stranger” starts, put on a pot to boil water with a few spices and laurel leaves in about one liter of water.
Jack White’s famous ideas are being recycled here, always in a beautiful way.
As the song starts with a deformed microphone and continues in a rhythmic way.
The chorus “catches our attention” with great ease.
The accompaniment of the guitar in a “laconic” way simply embellishes the song even more.
Only Child
With “Only Child” the tempo goes down, as the first tears make their appearance on the cheeks.
The reason is the onion, which is finely chopped along with the mushrooms and the florence pepper.
A ballad, that can easily reach the charts.
At the same time it reveals the intelligence of the two creators to make beautiful melodies without complicated musical motifs.
Do not Bother Me
Once “Don’t Bother Me”, begins, we check whether the meat is colored and add the coriander.
Put the meat in the pot with quick moves!
While the water is already boiling, remove the laurel leaves and spices, so that we do not “fish them out” at the time of serving.
We lower the fire, as opposed to the song that goes very fast, almost at a hard rock and/or heavy metal rythm at its closure.
Simple in composition, difficult to perform as the rhythm changes continuously.
You do not call it a masterpiece, but it’s gassy closure along with the solo, would be envied by many heavy metal bands.
Shine the Light On Me
As the beautiful “Shine the Light On Me” enters, we put the chopped onion, pepper and mushrooms in the same pan with the meat.
We let them stew as well.
The song could easily become a hit with a catchy chorus and a beautiful melody.
The piano plays a big role, as opposed to the previous song that … The guitar makes the show.
Although the basic pattern is the result of music recycling from the singer’s personal chores, I do not think anyone is bothered by it.
One of the best songs of the album.
Somedays (I Do not Feel Like Trying)
The next ballad is “Somedays (I Do not Feel Like Trying)”.
Until you understand that the similarities with Eric Clapton‘s “Wonderful Tonight” are quite obvious in many places …
Pour the cooked vegetables into the meat pot.
The song, of course, strengthens towards the end and at many points changes tempo, incorporating other “stealing” products.
The way, however, is simple, handsome.
Hey Gyp (Dig the Slowness)
Starting the “Hey Gyp (Dig the Slowness)”, Donovan‘s cover, add the smoked paprika, salt, pepper and curry.
The Scottish musician had written it about his loyal friend Gyp Mills, a sculptor who died three days before releasing The Raconteurs album.
The song is even faster than the original and with Patrick Keeler, drummer of the band, making a demonstration of technique.
Harmonica has a leading role.
Let the meat boil with all the ingredients inside, and if you want, add one – two tablespoons of tomato paste, so it will get a better red color.
Sunday Driver
“Sunday Driver” continues on the album and all you have to do is let the food boil for a while, stirring it from time to time.
With a simple riff, the song is kept quite high, but it does not impress.
Now That You’re Gone
“Now That You’re Gone“, however, quickly gains attention.
Destined to be hit, it easily gains attention.
A beautiful melody, a simple solo and vocals that guide the song, are its ingredients.
Mix the ingredients in the pot, which is in a low heat and leave for a while, once all the ingredients have been in.
Live and Lie
The “Live a Lie” is not anything special.
With a ripped riff, it could easily be played or created by other bands.
It does not spoil the already positive image for the rest of the album.
What’s Yours Is Mine
As soon as “What’s Yours Is Mine” begins, we prepare it in a half-full glass of water for the “fastening” of the sauce.
Add 2-3 tablespoons of flour to the warm water and mix it until it does not cloud.
The song could be described as experimental with the tempo changing like a teen’s mood after a difficult day at school.
But this “experimentation” has been used so much by the versatile musician, that just sounds familiar.
It’s not one of the best moments in the album.
Thoughts and Prayers
However, closing is very good with the melodious “Thoughts and Prayers“.
After we have spent some time stirring Gulasz at regular intervals, we try to have some salt or if we want it a bit spicier.
This procedure must precede with a bit of tasting in the spoon, which must be continuous but not intense.
The reason is for nothing to be left in the spoon to try and the wall not to be a set of spatter film.
If everything is good in taste, add the water to the flour and mix for about 5 minutes until the sauce is set.
The last song is an almost folk rock ballad with small rhythm changes.
With the violin playing a very distinctive role, but also defining the quality of the song.
Ripped riffs still give a touch of beauty to the song, where Led Zeppelin and The Who meet to admire another borrowing.
Gulasz is ideally combined with mashed potatoes for greater enjoyment.
“Help Us Stranger” is an enjoyable experience.
Although there are a lot of “lending” and musical recycling, the song performances are very remarkable.
It’s not something that will make you say “wtf, what is this,” but you will enjoy it from the first hearing.
In the next, you will discover other beautiful spots and you can also distinguish different songs.
Like Gulasz, it can be eaten cold.
Especially if it is “stolen” from the pot quickly with a spoon so that you are not seen …
… Then it’s even more delicious!
Help Us Stranger με… Gulasz
Bored and Razed
Help Me Stranger
Only Child
Don’t Bother Me
Shine the Light On Me
Καθώς μπαίνει το πανέμορφο “Shine the Light On Me“, βάζουμε στο ίδιο τηγάνι που είχαμε το κρέας, το ψιλοκομμένο κρεμμύδι, πιπεριά και μανιτάρια.
Somedays (I Don’t Feel Like Trying)
Η επόμενη μπαλάντα είναι το “Somedays (I Don’t Feel Like Trying)”.
Hey Gyp (Dig the Slowness)
Sunday Driver
Now That You’re Gone
Το “Now That You’re Gone“, όμως, κερδίζει γρήγορα την προσοχή.
Live a Lie
What’s Yours Is Mine
Μόλις ξεκινήσει το “What’s Yours Is Mine” ετοιμάζουμε σε ένα ποτήρι νερού, γεμάτο ως την μέση το «δέσιμο» της σάλτσας.
Thoughts and Prayers
