This question comes almost simultaneously with the disco-rock song Smokie.
But this is not a Smokie song, but a composition by an Australian band, New World.
A creation by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman in 1972.
The verse, quite original (we say now), talks about a young man who lives next to a girl and never expressed his love for her.
As he sees her moving away in a limousine, he realizes that for 24 years he avoided expressing his feelings, as a result of which he lost her forever!
The feeling of sadness and remorse for what he did not do all these years was the inspiration for this song.
Personally, I’m really wondering what Sally has to say about all this …. but I’ll probably keep wondering every time I listen to this song.
Of course, all this is not worth mentioning if there was no cover of the song by the Dutch Gompie.
In their song performance the question “Alice, Who the Fuck Is Alice?” hovers in every refrain.
The song came out with this question as to its title in 1995 and was quite successful.
Basically, Gompie is a project by Peter Koelewijn and Rob Peters.
Peters had visited a Gompie bar in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.
When jockey Onno Pelser put this song down, the chorus would drop and the crowd would shout, “Alice, Who the Fuck Is Alice?”
So the next day Peters creates the project and a day later the song is recorded.
And so, we all still wonder, who is this Alice after all ???
