The truth may always be in the center or more simply, in the middle, but man always seeks and looks to the ends.
The extremities in man are birth and death!
In reality, however, no one knows which of the two represents one situation or the other.
This unknown creates a natural curiosity, which reaches to the obsessive search for the truth…
If after all, birth is death or death is another birth.
In the midst of these extreme questions lies life itself.
A state of a constant search for our real “EGO” or some Socratic demon.
Maybe with a personal choice of each person, whether to follow the birth and its constant recurrence or death, as if living in a continuous “Marmot Day“.
The Coldun
We are all born alone – except for twins, triplets, and even Siamese.
And the German band Coldun actually started its life as a one-man band in 2007.
The name came from the single thematic debut “Necessariis; Dubiis? Caritas?” and has to do with a metaphysical quest.
Since 2016 they now exist as a complete band, but always, like metal music, follows a metaphysical tone, both melodic and lyrical.
In their 4th complete creation entitled “Grand Sun Ritual“, the themes of birth, life and death are pervasive in every verse.
And the album’s eponymous song, a harbinger of the LP, puts us in the world of searching for the deeper meaning of birth and death.
The song’s first contact with the public came on October 29, 2020, and is the work of all Coldun members.
This is a song with clear influences from emotions and philosophy.
It moves in Progressive Rock, Atmospheric, Doom Metal, Epic, and essentially Progressive Metal paths, with an introduction almost in Oriental Metal pattern.
According to Coldun, the music was written first, and lyrics were “buttoned” on it.
The lyrics
The main source of inspiration for the song was the general questions about life and death.
Perhaps the first questions a man asks when his instincts are silenced.
These are questions that open the door to a huge imaginary library, which is nothing but our own spirit.
In their lyrics, death does not have a negative meaning, but a positive one, not as an ending, but as a new beginning.
Let us not forget that in both Eastern and Western philosophy, this transition is likened to the death of the caterpillar, which leads to the birth of a butterfly.
The band’s creator, Coldun (Vocals, Bass, Hammond, Synths), tells us that his approach is a result of the many trips he has made.
(In Greek the journey comes from the etymology of “worthy I saw”, which means I met those that have value and have not only a geographical character).
And these (the trips) had an educational character, giving mental and spiritual knowledge.
The basic idea is that “nothing is made to kill us.”
With the philosophy itself giving a note of optimism to the sense of the greatest human loss, that of life.
Although the approach has an optimistic disposition to address a pessimistic issue, it is pervasive with melancholy.
Lyrics that follow the musical mood with many changes, but always in an almost Doom dark pattern.
After all, we must not forget that “light looks better in the dark“.
Philosophical … Optimism
Certainly, philosophical optimism almost never seems like, Optimism.
The dark thoughts of philosophers always dig deep to discover the light of truth.
Like miners, always smudged with the blackness of coal.
In essence, the lyrics are about a dying person.
He is surprised that he feels different than usual and this is due to the fact that he no longer feels pain.
Positive emotions replace pain, fear, and doubt, with joy and certainty taking their place.
On top of that, a helping hand comes to guide him to the light and to the transformation into a god.
But as the singer of the band explains to us, it has nothing to do with religious doctrines and teachings, but with simple sparks of mysticism.
Maybe a few drops of knowledge from the “other side”.
And as taboo as this issue seems, the band approached it just as calmly.
Enjoyment and satisfaction were the emotions that accompanied the completion, but also the creation of the song.
It may not belong to the songs that approach the political-social reality, but it is one that deals with the spiritual eternity.
Sometimes, after all, it is important to approach the spiritual world.
