According to experts, dependence on various substances primarily has to do with a person’s personality.
There are many factors and they are certainly complex that contribute to the condition of a person who starts the abuse.
In cases of artists, the key factors are:
- Consumer lifestyle
- Stress and pressure
- Hanging out with other substance users
- A chaotic family environment
- Excessive and unrealistic expectations
- Mental pain
- Loneliness
- The pursuit of lasting happiness and pleasure
One of these artists is former Dream Theater drummer, Mike Portnoy, who let his life be controlled by alcohol and drugs.
As he said: “For fifteen years straight I drank and drugged every single day. But it was always kind of responsible and was always at the end of the night …
As time went on, I would start to have my first couple of drinks before the encore, then during the keyboard solo in the middle of the show…
Towards the end, I was drinking earlier in the day while the opening band were on.
As a result I would get onstage already half-crocked.”
Portnoy through periods of time was using from marijuana to cocaine, though he said his “drug of choice” was alcohol.
All this started to create tension among the band members.
The band’s vocalist, James LaBrie once said that Portnoy was “drinking like a fish”… non-stop.
On 20th April 2000, the day of his thirty-third birthday, Portnoy had his last glass of alcohol.
It was the final show of Dream Theater’s “Scenes from a Memory tour”.
He had found the Anonymous Alcoholics “twelve-step program” and made it his priority not to miss sessions and meeting while on tour.
When he quit drinking, he started writing a series of songs that would talk about this “12-step program”, or “12-step suite” as it is called.
The goal was to include these songs in a series of albums. As it eventually happened.
His problem of alcoholism and drug abuse, however, did not inspire him musically only when he quit.
This was the concept behind the song “The Mirror” on the 1994 album “Awake”. This song could be considered something of a prequel.
The songs along with the albums in which they were included are as follows:
- “The Glass Prison” – Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence (2002)
A song that speaks about the first 3 steps. Reflection, Restoration, Revelation
- “This Dying Soul” – Train of Thought (2003)
Includes steps 4 and 5: Reflections of Reality, Release. Musically is a continuation of “The Glass Prison”
- “The Root of All Evil” – Octavarium (2005)
Perhaps the roughest song in terms of lyrics, talking about steps 6 and 7 (Ready, Remove)
- “Repentance” – Systematic Chaos (2007)
Featuring steps 8 and 9 (Regret, Restitution) is considered the most “clear minded” song as Portnoy was already 7 years sober when he wrote it. It can be described as a song of redemption lyrically
- “The Shattered Fortress” – Black Clouds & Silver Linings (2009)
Contains references to the 3 final steps (Restraint, Receive, Responsible).
It is a song that in some way integrates all the previous ones together in one. Both musically as well as lyrically, in order to give an ideal conclusion.
The whole “Twelve -step Suite” concept of these songs is dedicated by Portnoy and the band “to Bill W. and his friends”, who is Bill Wilson, the founder of Anonymous Alcoholics.
Mike Portnoy himself described the procedure of writing and composing the songs as very therapeutic.
However, upon completion of this “project”, he said that he felt like he “dug himself into a hole with it.
It was a nice idea seven years ago but after a while it became like an obligation hanging over my head. Like a homework assignment.”
His goal was for the band to play the “Twelve-Step Suite” live in its entirety but they never got the chance as he left Dream Theater on 2010.
Finally, on 2017 in collaboration with other musicians, they played all of the songs in a few selected shows on a tour for his 50th birthday.
As he himself had stated, these were “selected events and not a new band or a project”.
This tour was in his words, a closure and he would not plan to revisit any material from this Dream Theater era.
Some artists have managed to escape this, others are still fighting their demons…
Ήταν η μέρα της τελευταίας εμφάνισης στα πλαίσια του “Scenes from a Memory tour”.
Ήταν το θέμα του τραγουδιού “The Mirror” , στο album “Awake”, του 1994.
- “The Glass Prison” – Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence (2002)
- “This Dying Soul” – Train Of Thought (2003)
Περιέχει τα βήματα 4 και 5: Reflections of Reality, Release.
- “The Root of All Evil” – Octavarium (2005)
- “Repentance” – Systematic Chaos (2007)
- “The Shattered Fortress” – Black Clouds & Silver Linings (2009)
