Where languages separate, notes unite!
How it sounds
Like indie pop or indie rock, but older.
Basically like psychedelic rock, with the addition of Indian strings.
Indie has nothing to do with Indian, it is like indie hipster in its original.
Why listen to it
Because all the big names in early rock played this genre from time to time.
Opening, at the same time, windows for the creation of new types of rock and more.
Essentially because it is the first encounter of Indian musical wealth with Western music.
Why not
Because the sound of the sitar irritates you and you consider tabla children’s percussion.
Where we meet it
The United Kingdom and America
When did it start
In the mid-’60s
Who are the pioneers
The term Raga identifies musical motifs of Indian classical music.
The early rock bands that used these, along with some traditional instruments such as the sitar, were characterized by this term.
It was first used in March 1966 to describe musicians with these characteristics.
Ravi Shankar is considered to be the main influence of the genre.
Like Davey Graham’s music track “She moved through the fair” is considered a station of the genre.
The Yardbirds ‘success with the 1965 “Heart Full of Soul” and the Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black” put the genre at the forefront of rock history.
In general, all bands, later sacred monsters of rock, dealt with this genre.
You have to listen
Quintessence, Ananda Shankar, Cornershop, Kula Shaker, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Black Angels, The Raghu Dixit Project, Agam, Swarathma.
Days of glory
60s early 70s and with some shapes in the 90s
Red card
The combination of western and Indian music presupposes a deep musical knowledge of both, something that few rock musicians have.
In essence, Jazz has absorbed musicians who have this knowledge.
What is it confused with
With Indian rock, psychedelic rock, indie rock in some cases, Sufi rock.
How do you describe it to an irrelevant
What the Beatles played when they had a beard!
