(Azerbaijani: Azərbaycan Roku)
The nightingale sings differently from place to place, but the same love song.
How it sounds
In Azeri… Basically something like Anatolu Rock, but in Azeri.
Something like a psychedelic Rock, with Jazz elements and plenty of Azeri folklore, but with a pseudo-European air.
It has nothing to do with the songs that Azerbaijan sends to Eurovision.
Why listen to it
Purely for encyclopedic reasons.
These are musicians with the classical music education of the Soviets and plenty of folklore, who know how to handle musical instruments.
Why not
No more folklore!
Enough with wanting to present Rock to a local lord or wannabe lord by wannabe rockers.
Where we meet it
In Azerbaijan, next to the Caspian Sea.
When did it start
The ‘60s.
Who are the pioneers
The pioneers include Coldünya, and Yuxu.
You have to listen
Experiment-OK, The Half, AynaBand, No Land.
Days of glory
I guess in the days when it belonged to the Soviet Republics when they sang hymns against Western imperialism and capitalism.
Always locally.
Red card
Another bad copy of “western” music, by well-educated musicians, adapted to local pathogenesis.
What is it confused with
With all kinds of Rock.
How do you describe it to an irrelevant
Anything Rock in Azeri. However, if you are in Baku, it is better to see the ancient market than to go to one of the local live shows.
