In nature, nothing is in vain. Even a slight flutter of a butterfly’s wings, in a fractal* way can create a hurricane.
It may be a conjecture, but no action remains in a void of indifference, nor does it enter into a universe of insignificance.
Everything is a sequence of events and everything is interconnected, just like the notes and lyrics of a song.
The song, even if the band that created it is no more, it is connected to its creator, but also to its listener.
Keeping a “Vendetta” of an unforgettable relationship.
Our small worries, when combined, create phobias, perhaps, sometimes realities.
“Some of us may wake up in the morning and have bad thoughts. How will the day go? What is the point? I’m afraid. I feel panic.
What’s wrong with me? I feel the weight of the world on my shoulders. How useless I am. Yet. Is it our fault that we feel this way?
Are we the only ones who feel that way?” Decy Bell of The After Maths begins her story.
She tells us very descriptively how she was inspired by the lyrics for the song “Vendetta” which is on their debut album “Hotel Hilbert”.
Their album was released on December 21 (2018) and was their last, as the band no longer exists.
However, as I mentioned before, nothing is lost, especially a song.
The lyrics
After Math’s voice continues to tell the story of the song’s lyrics.
“The lyrics try in a very personal way, to express various issues of the modern world that each of us, may feel that may concern him.
Topics such as the struggle for survival, depression and psychological disorders from the modern way of life, the destruction of the environment, unemployment, addiction, disease, the burden of war and exploitation, misery, refugees, loneliness, sadness, and despair of our days.
And yet, somewhere in the lyrics it is mentioned: “Yet, we are winning”.
It’s no coincidence that we chose this track to make a video clip after the release of the album, trying to capture the emotions and thoughts it describes, through a “brainstorming”, black and white photo-collage of many important events in the world”.
The breath of the Muse does not come in a clear way, but when it finds a gap between the perception of our consciousness and the disorientation of our daily routine.
The melody
Later, Duru completed the musical part of the song with his own notes.
“Probably, the music came first in Decy’s head, in those magical stages between sleeping and waking up.
First, the characteristic riff of the track came, and then the phrase “I got fear as my friend and panic as my lover” and then the rest.
The song was very easily written by the band. As if it already existed somewhere and was waiting for us.”
The basics of our music search always offer a solid foundation where a new idea can stand.
“The music for this song was drawn from our love for bands like The Dead Weather and Led Zeppelin, the blues and the rock ‘n roll, the guitar riffs, and the garage.
We like combinations and experimentation.”
A song not only has some or some personal stories behind the creation, sometimes it accompanies others after it is completed.
The course of the song created a conflict between the band’s voice and the guitar, but without creating any animosity or vendetta between them.
“We played at six dogs in Athens, in February and we were very excited.
Duru makes second voices in the lives and so Decy sits in the center and slightly to the right, so they don’t hit each other.
Anyone who has seen us live will know that we are jumping on stage, especially Decy, which is not quiet at all.
So at the time of the Vendetta bridge“, as Christos-guitar characteristically states.
“Decy, out of nowhere, hit her head on my guitar, and immediately she changed her hairstyle to hide the bump on her head.
The bump was huge and there is photographic evidence of it haha!”
The trials
However, a song to be released in a final form goes through some trials.
Few songs have been released “all at once” and these are almost archetypal.
“Vendetta” has another performance.
“In the studio, we recorded a solo saxophone (by Michalis Kraounakis) which never came in.
While it was very interesting, because it was recorded afterward, technically, it couldn’t be exactly what we imagined.
But we can release it at some point “, the band reveals.
The message
Even a listener can become the bearer of thought of his own, which he would like to hear with notes.
“The message that this very important piece conveys to us is that of solidarity and effort, even if everything seems futile.
We are all afraid, we all experience the social, psychological, emotional, and physical consequences of the modern world.
However, we should not give up, and above all, we should not experience all these feelings alone. We said, yet, Yet, WE are winning,” the band concludes.
Although the band no longer exists, it has certainly left its mark on music, but also an interesting story.
