Anger is a way to seek justice, angry music is a way to claim it.
How it sounds
It’s as if some angry girls are singing something between Punk, Indie rock, and Alternative Rock.
In essence, this is exactly what it is!
Always with lyrics that speak of feminism and equal rights.
Why listen to it
Because we must always listen to girls, whether they sing or talk.
But also because it is a genuine expression of Punk and the DIY movement, beyond the musical expression of the 3rd and 4th wave of feminism.
Why not
Because they are not interested in musical evolution but only in the musical investment of their feminist ideas, often without inspiration.
Where we meet it
In Washington and even more specifically in Olympia
When did it start
The early ‘90s
Who are the pioneers
Essentially when Bratmobile’s Allison Wolfe and Molly Neuman met and started releasing a fanzine called “Girl Germs”.
Another milestone year is when Lois Maffeo, the movement’s leader, was hosted in 1991 on Olympia’s “Your Dream Girl” show.
Bikini Kill is shielded by the movement’s first musical expressions.
You must listen
Heavens to Betsy, Excuse 17, Sleater-Kinney, the Fastbacks, the Pastels, Kicking Giant, Rose Melberg.
Days of glory
Until the mid-90s, perhaps because of the Grunge glow.
But mainly with the enthusiasm and the general acceptance, then the most remarkable bands came out.
Red card
Like any musical genre, which accompanies a social movement, it quickly wears out and there is always in the bands of the genre a hatred and even a fear for glory.
Many times it becomes a protest for the protest alone.
What is it confused with
Hardcore Punk, Punk Rock, Alternative Rock, Indie Rock, and Queercore
How do you describe it to an irrelevant
Some girls sing punk and sometimes they do not look like girls, but they always look upset.
