Art has many forms … But any kind of art can take you away.
Through a movie, a book, a song that can make the mind create from simple images, to whole worlds.
It fuels the imagination and captivates you, usually by casting yourself as a protagonist or even an invisible spectator.
One of the best known directors of the not-so-mainstream (meaning not Hollywood and blockbusters) scene was Andrei Tarkovsky.
For many, he was one of the most influential Russian filmmakers.
His films deal with spiritual and metaphysical themes and are known for their slow tempo, with lengthy shots.
A dreamy vision and a predisposition to nature and memory.
Through many films he directed, he considered “The Mirror” to be his most personal work.
The film is a mixture of childhood memories, news images and poems by his famous father Arseniy Tarkovsky.
The Mirror
The movie talks of a man who, during a severe nervous breakdown, goes back in thought to his past.
In events and places of his childhood. In the house where he spent his childhood years, where he was born and where his parents lived.
He again experiences his special dreams of the time and romps in the snow with his first girlfriend.
Looking back on his life, he starts to doubt whether he has given enough to those who loved him so infinitely.
A film of nostalgia, sadness, and dreams in which past and present intertwine.
Tarkovsky himself had written, “I believe that healing comes from a spiritual crisis, such a crisis is an attempt to find oneself”.
Amenra
A band that deals with the soul, emotions, experiences are Amenra.
The Belgians with their intense and emotional doom/sludge pound the diaphragm as hard as the soul.
A band that does not rest on its laurels, and keeps on searching for alternative forms of display for their music.
Passing messages through their songs revolving around loss, pain but also processing and healing of the wounds in soul and mind.
A band that can create so many images and so many emotions inside of you, could only be the appropriate band to “dress” such a movie with melodies.
The band’s guitarist, Mathieu Vandekerckhove, has told R1 Vibes:
“Tarkovsky has always been an inspiration for us. Strong and powerful visual images and story.
With a depth, about life. It is an honor for us to make a soundtrack for “The Mirror” film.
A film that makes you think about the concept of “time”. Time is running but we can stand still.”
So on April 17th, 2020, those who are lucky enough to be in Brugge, Belgium will have the chance to experience something special.
At the initiative of MOOOV Filmfestival and the Cactus Muziekcentrum stage, Amenra will perform live at the Cult! Live, a soundtrack for the movie “The Mirror“.
A soundtrack composed by the band, with their melodies intending to awaken all the senses and images of the film through each and every note.
The philosophy of the band, after all, reflects that of the film, in an invisible way.
It is expected to be a night of emotions revolving around family, spirituality, and loss.
A night full of images.. and worlds created through imagination and beyond…
