των Zeppelin.
Dazed and Confused
Το Σεπτέμβριο του 1971, το τραγούδι μπαίνει στον δίσκο των The Yardbirds, “Live Yardbirds: Featuring Jimmy Page”.
Stairway To Heaven
Whole Lotta Love
- “Boogie Chillen” του John Lee Hooker και το
- “Let’s Have A Party” της Wanda Jackson.
Babe I’m Gonna Leave You
Ακόμα μια κραυγαλέα περίπτωση είναι το σπαρακτικό “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You”, από το ντεμπούτο άλμπουμ τους.
Το οποίο, επισημάνθηκε σαν παραδοσιακό, αλλά επεξεργασμένο από τον Jimmy Page (Traditional, arr. by Jimmy Page).
Η πρώτη επίσημη ηχογράφηση του τραγουδιού έγινε από την Joan Baez, στο live album “In Concert” του 1962.
Communication Breakdown
Melodic “parthenogenesis” …
Parthenogenesis is a concept that does not concern human civilization, except religious myths.
Music and art in general, substantially build culture and their development is identical with its progress.
Some pioneers, even though “borrowing” from the past, evolve by adding new elements.
Others, of course, simply steal unchanged, many times, devalued elements, and present them as their own.
Pioneers in this tactic were none other than the enormous Led Zeppelin.
If one looks closely in their discography, they can definitely find musical roots, coming of many unknown artists …
Who became known through the “compositions” of Zeppelin.
Indicatively, I will refer to some of them
Dazed and Confused
The definition of this process is “Dazed and Confused,” a song made known by Led Zeppelin, through their debut album.
The creation of the original song belongs to Jake Holmes.
In June 1967, the song was first released on his first album, entitled “The Above Ground Sound“.
In September 1971, the song was included in The Yardbirds’ album, “Live Yardbirds: Featuring Jimmy Page“.
With “encoded” title “I’m Confused,” with Page’s mark and no reference to the creator.
The epitome of theft comes with Led Zeppelin’s debut album, where again no reference is made to the artist.
Stairway To Heaven
The most notable is the case of the famous “Stairway To Heaven” from the 1971 “Led Zeppelin 4” album.
Its unique intro belongs to Randy California of the Spirit band.
The composition in which we first listen the melody is called “Taurus“.
An instrumental track, which was written for Spirit‘s debut album in 1968.
Of course the creator never got money for the rights of composition.
It is noteworthy that Page has never denied having owned this album.
Whole Lotta Love
The “miracle” of musical production did not resist on Led Zeppelin‘s “kleptomania”.
We’re talking about the “Whole Lotta Love“, released in 1969 on “Led Zeppelin II”
The original song belongs to Muddy Waters, with the title “You need love” (1962).
A creation by Willi Dixon, which Zeppelin managed to pillage his lyrics.
In their live appearances they included some other songs such as:
- “Boogie Chillen” of John Lee Hooker and the
- “Let’s Have A Party” of Wanda Jackson.
Never mentioning the names of performers and / or creators.
Babe I’m Gonna Leave You
Another highly notable case is the heartbreaking “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You“, from their debut album.
Which was highlighted as traditional but edited by Jimmy Page, (Traditional, arr. by Jimmy Page).
The route of the song, however, is quite complex and of course it is neither traditional nor even … orphaned by a creator.
The first official recording of the song was made by Joan Baez on the 1962 live album “In Concert“.
The song did not belong to her, but to her friend and fellow student Anne Bredon, and was written in 1959.
The two friends were no fans of Led Zeppelin, so they ignored the existence of this version of their song.
Just two decades after its creation and after the band no longer existed, they were informed of it.
Again she had to wait another decade to register her name, but next to Page and Plant.
Communication Breakdown
Not even the “Communication Breakdown” was spared a small theft, which was named as “inspiration” for the creation.
The victim this time is Eddie Cochran with “Nervous Breakdown” in 1959.
Of course, on the label of the song are the names of Page, Jones, Bonham.
Its production is full of pioneering gimmicks of the guitarist.
However, it would not hurt to mention the name of the great Rock N ‘Roll star of the past.
Of course it is not the only band that supported, at least at the beginning, their career in various “borrowings”…
Without return!
In time we will try to find the real paternity of many more music masterpieces …
