Distance Over Time
Το συγκεκριμένο κείμενο όμως δεν αφορά το «The Astonishing» αλλά το πιο πρόσφατο πόνημά τους, το «Distance Over Time».
Ακολουθούν τα «Fall Into The Light» και η έτερη κορυφαία στιγμή του δίσκου, το «Barstool Warrior», 2 τραγούδια που θυμίζουν εποχές «Black Clouds & Silver Linings» με τις παιχνιδιάρικες μελωδίες τους.
Ιδίως το «Barstool Warrior» μου θύμισε πολύ «The Count of Tuscany» σε ατμόσφαιρα αλλά και σε στίχους, άλλωστε και τα 2 στιχουργικά έχουν τη σφραγίδα του John Petrucci.
Μεγάλωσα με δισκάρες όπως το Images and Words, το Metropolis pt. 2, το Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, το Octavarium, (ένας δίσκος που κατά τη γνώμη μου περικλείει και περιγράφει μουσικά όσα είναι οι Theater).

Back to the… starting line
So Dream Theater decided to leave the operatic experiments and revisit their (not too distant) past.
The truth is that “The Astonishing” has puzzled their fans.
It was something almost completely different to what everybody was used to listen to from the golden boys of the progressive rock and metal scene.
Just like any other Dream Theater album, however, it was difficult to come to any conclusion about the album by just one listening session.
Distance Over Time
This article though is not about “The Astonishing”, rather than their most recent release, “Distance Over Time”.
On a personal note, Dream Theater being the band that introduced me to the heavy metal scene and genres, my expectations from the New Yorkers are the highest. Always.
The first track of the album called “Untethered Angel” made me feel a sense of refreshment, a feeling of returning to their roots.
It is considered a classic progressive Dream Theater-ish song, featuring the elements and atmosphere one expects from them.
However, it is not enough to make a statement about the context, quality and level of this album.
And at that point comes the second track, to sweep you off your feet.
In my opinion, “Paralyzed” is one of the best songs in the album, one of the highest and brightest moments.
It is as heavy as expected and, at the same time, melodic in such a way that doesn’t allow you to be bored or tired at any second of the whole song.
Having all the characteristics that have made Dream Theater one of the top bands for the past 30 or so years.
The two following tracks, “Fall Into The Light” and “Barstool Warrior”, the latter considered another one of the best tracks in this album, bring back a feeling of “Black Clouds & Silver Linings” era with their melodic virtuosity.
The “Barstool Warrior” especially, reminded me of “The Count of Tuscany” both atmospherically and lyrically. Besides, both songs are written by John Petrucci.
On “Room 137” the band seems to move to an even more heavy direction on melody and lyrics, kind of like the “Train of Thought” era, however somewhere along the way this direction went missing.
Already after the first chorus the song seems to be repeating itself both in lyrics and melody.
After that? Chaos. The fact that after a number of listening sessions of this album, only the first 4 tracks stuck with me.
These tracks set the tone for the album initially, but this tone remains the same constantly throughout the whole album.
Very Dream Theater unlike.
I grew up listening to magnificent albums such as Images and Words, Metropolis pt. 2, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Octavarium (the album that, in my opinion, contains and best describes the musical characteristincs of Dream Theater as a whole, better than any other).
In each one of their previous albums you could feel every song to be special, as if being the best among the best.
In “Distance Over Time” the band seems to be trying to go back to something that is not them anymore.
Lately Dream Theater have given me the impression that the only thing in their mind musically and inspirationally is experimenting, a feeling that is clearly expressed in “The Astonishing”.
It can also be seen nowadays, as they look to be out of new inspirations and ideas and found a path on the first 2-3 tracks of the album and followed the exact same path throughout the rest of it.
This shift in focus, which can be seen as clearly as ever now, became clearer upon the departure of Mike Portnoy, when Dream Theater released their 12th album, the first with new drummer Mike Mangini, called “Dream Theater”.
And, in my opinion, when a band releases an album with their name and it is not a debut album, they seem to have already run out of ideas and inspirations.
