When did it start
The early ’80s, but the roots start with protopunk.
More specifically with bands like the MC5, the Stooges, and the New York Dolls a decade earlier.
Who are the pioneers
In fact, the Gun Club with the debut of the album “Fire of Love” gave substance to the genre.
But it exploded early in the next decade with the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Oblivians, and the Gories.
The great success of the White Stripes at the end of the same decade made the sound known to the general public.
