Before the Rock audience “renounced” them, mainly because of Bono’s actions, U2 wrote songs with depth and through their soul.
Almost every song had an interesting back story and “Love Is Blindness” did not escape that.
The song was released with “Achtung Baby” in 1992, but it was written 4 years earlier during the recording for the album “Rattle and Hum“.
Although its music is charged throughout the band, the main melody was written by Bono on piano, but not for U2.
Bono’s original thought was to be given to Nina Simone!
In the end, however, the other members “loved” it and so decided to interpret it by themselves.
During the recording of Achtung Baby, guitarist The Edge, divorces his wife, Aislinn O’Sullivan.
This separation also had an effect on the final form of the song, since its solo was an expression of his personal experience.
The lyrics
The lyrical part is ambiguous.
Although most believe that it refers to the Anglo-Irish conflict, yet the author of the lyrics notes that this is his personal situation.
Specifically, Bono states that “the lyrics give the image of terrorism, bomb construction and parked cars exploding.
But on a personal level he observed the phenomenon, in which people implant a kind of psychological sleep, in some other people“.
When the mine is “trampled”, it tears the life of the person who carried it to pieces.
In the end, of course, everything turns around and the punishment finds the one who implanted the mine.
In general, the lyrics have many metaphors and everyone can find their own meaning.
This, after all, is the purpose of poetry as well.
It is worth noting that in the “Zoo TV Tour” of 1992-1993 the song was played in 154 of the 157 concerts.
Since then, it has been played rarely live.
It met several covers, with the most recent and most remarkable that of Jack White from the musical theme of Great Gatsby.
