There are some songs that have the energy, but also the spontaneity of a small child.
Like fireballs, they walk around the space, observe everything, laugh for no reason, and of course, then they want all this to be told to anyone who is willing to listen to their endless chatter.
Somehow a song can haunt and surround a musician. It just walks from head to head with the musicians of a band.
Many times, songs as separate entities want to be embodied in the fingers of a musician and almost always succeed.
The song “Rocket Song” is on the album “Born Enraged” by the Downtown Association, which was released in March 2019.
Giorgos Matikas, guitarist and founder of the band, says: “The music was written by the whole band and the lyrics by Dean.
The strange thing about inspiration in terms of lyrics is that it was like self-identifying and writing on its own from the resulting energy composing it.
It was obvious that the song was called the rocket because we all felt that we would support the take-off of this record.
As a result, the rest of the lyrics describe the images and actions we encountered during the writing process,” he continues.
All of them, apart from being members of the Downtown Association, are also patrons of “Ladadika”, an area full of bars, live stages, and therefore many crazy stories.
“The road to the oil shops where we have the studio was suddenly found to have a huge useless fan.
It is supposed to be part of a bioclimatic study conducted in the neighborhood. It seemed very funny then, as it continues to be, as it is always closed and useless.
It could be a surreal operation for hot summer days.
We captured it in the lyrics of the song, putting the dose of surrealism that was needed“.
However, this fan, in the upper Ladadika, looks more like an artistic intervention than a part of a study.
Maybe for someone sly, it just smells like a political starter to an always innocent “lord”.
In any case, it is a monument worthy of ironic commentary, rather than something that should remain in the history of the city of Thessaloniki.
The creative progress…
As for the creative progress, the guitarist of the band continues the story:
“Music was the first thing that was written, it has to do with the way we usually work.
The main musical themes come from the guitar and we all then set up the song together.
The lyrics usually come after the melodic line of the voice and the rhythmic distribution of the syllables have been completed. It has to do clearly with how it suits us to work.”
Creating a song is like trying to make a couple a child, there is usually one way.
Just as every child is different and understands everything differently, so does a band.
The song was played by the band before their debut album was released.
“We started putting it on the live set long before its release, we would probably say from the middle of 2018.”
As for the message he conveys: “Yes, the message is clear. A song can and should elevate you on its own.
This is the essence of music for us.
If he doesn’t do it, then it’s better not to give up“, concludes George Matikas, who shared the story of the song.
Furthermore, we must not forget that a song has as its main purpose entertainment.
But if we allow it, it will be our guide to escape from everyday life.
