Notes are always untamed and can easily cross even the toughest borders.
They can travel and if we let go of the harsh and unimaginable day-to-day lives and trust them with our souls, then they may take us with them.
As if on some windsurf on an indelible wave crossing the Atlantic across the Mediterranean.
For example from Athens to the coast of Brazil.
The Athenians Dirty Fuse through their 7-inch EP “Back to Brazil” tells us about this journey through a few notes, as only surf rock can do.
The whole band’s creation not only narrates an upcoming journey back to the home of their founding member, Duda Victor but is also a journey into its past.
Maybe a bit of anticipation of the future for the whole band.
Back to Brazil
It was released in 2017 in a tangible form, but it was written and recorded in 2015 when the guitarist decided to return home and the band still had six members.
The band’s co-creator drummer Christos Cogios, guitarist Costas Bakoulas, and Victor already had some idea in mind, with John Drake already on the bass.
The newly arrived in-band and Brazilian guitarist’s replacement, Erie Kapetanakis is also involved.
The song was the farewell to the old guitarist and the welcoming of the new guitarist.
A time node that blends the past with the coming future.
It was first performed live at the presentation of the 7-inch album in Athens sometime in 2015.
Unofficially it was played at the Duda farewell party in Bad City in March 2015.
Since then, the song has been played in almost every live show, but only while Kostas Bakoulas was in the band.
As the song is about three guitars, it was never played live again after his departure, except on their tour in Brazil.
In essence, this music was prophetic as well, for it was a pre-eminence for their upcoming tour of Brazil with ten appearances and next to bands such as the Atlantics.
And of course, on this 2018 tour, the song was played in all their appearances.
The message
As for the message of the song, it is like a painting of the surrealist art stream, everyone can give their own interpretation, but also some personal perception of each message.
Its interpretation is defined by the observer’s own soul, but also by the mental disposition of each moment.
It also defines the most intrinsic essence of surf rock, where the lyrics are not blended with notes.
The optimistic nostalgic mood of the composition wants to entice the listener on a journey under the sounds of the waves, but he is free to choose the route and destination.
After all, this is the magic of the instrumental pieces, their freedom of interpretation, but also the traveling character they can have.
Even if the journey is on a… surfboard without unnecessary luggage.
